A looming pipeline of climate disaster

The new Albanese Government failed its first climate test by approving an extension of Woodside’s North West Shelf gas facility out to 2070 - unleashing 4 billion tonnes of climate pollution. That’s the equivalent of 10 years’ worth of Australia’s annual emissions waved through in a single, shameful decision by Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt.

And it gets worse: this climate bomb is just one of dozens of new coal and gas proposals awaiting a federal government decision. Every new, polluting project that goes ahead will supercharge the unnatural floods, fires and storms that are putting us all in harm’s way.

The science is clear: if we want a safer future for our kids, these projects must be stopped.

Gaslit by the gas industry

We fought hard to secure climate progress during the Albanese Government’s first term on renewable energy and transport. In 2025, Australians re-elected the ALP on the promise of a renewable-powered future - not climate destruction.

So why do they keep approving new coal and gas projects?

Because fossil fuel corporations hold enormous power over our politicians, policymaking and public opinion.

For decades, these corporations have donated to political parties, misled the public with expensive public relations and advertising campaigns and even set up fake “grassroots” movements to deceive us. They’re gaslighting lawmakers and everyday Australians into believing that the damage they are doing is somehow good for us - and that stopping fossil fuel expansion is politically impossible.

We must dismantle the fossil fuel industry’s influence - or our kids will pay the price.

Approving new coal and gas projects should be political poison

That’s why we’ve created the Fossil Fuel Fighting Fund. We’re aiming to raise $780,000 by 30 June to power a high-impact, science-led policy, advocacy and media campaign to strip the industry of its social license and combat industry disinformation with facts, so approving any new coal or gas project becomes politically toxic.

Here’s how we’ll do it:

+ Expert research and analysis that reveal the true costs to Australians of every new coal and gas project.

+ Hard-hitting media and communications campaigns that expose the lies of the fossil fuel industry, and build public opposition to fossil fuel expansion.

+ Influential policy and advocacy work to arm lawmakers with the right tools to pass strong laws that stop new coal and gas projects in their tracks.

We will hold the Government accountable

Fossil fuel expansion is a polluting stain on the Albanese Government’s climate and energy legacy - undermining their climate progress in other areas. They can’t have their cake and eat it.

At the 2025 election, Australian voters gifted the ALP with a landslide victory to deliver on their promise of a renewable-powered future. We plan to hold them accountable to that promise. It’s past time for the Government to show genuine climate leadership, and do what’s needed to protect our kids' future.

Help keep them accountable by making a tax-deductible donation today.

Climate science, check. Renewables, check. Next: fossil fuels

Together with our friends in the climate movement, we’ve successfully shifted national attitudes on climate change and energy. In 2022, Australians voted for climate action, not climate denial. In 2025, Australians voted for a future powered by renewables, and rejected polluting energy policies.

Now we need to stop new coal and gas projects in their tracks.

The fossil fuel lobby has deep pockets - but we have you

They’re lobbying for profits. We’re fighting for our kids' future. The Climate Council is 100% independent and powered by a caring community of supporters, just like you. Our independence is vital to our mission - it means we can speak truth to power, and hold decision-makers in government and industry accountable to the science and evidence.

Our community’s power is in the collective. If each of us play a role then together we can win the battle for hearts and minds.

Our caring community

A courageous catalyst for climate action

Days after the Abbott Government abolished the Climate Commission, the Climate Council rose from its ashes in the biggest crowdfunding campaign of its time in Australia.

Eleven years on, we've brought together Australia's leading experts in climate science, communications, industry and more to become a leading voice in the national debate - generating tens of thousands of media hits and reaching millions of eyeballs each year with our digital content. We have campaigned hard for new laws and regulations that cut climate pollution, and enable more of the solutions we need.

Together with our community of 558,000 caring people, we’ve successfully shifted the national conversation on climate and energy, and secured major policy wins that are slashing climate pollution and injecting billions of dollars into clean power.

We know there’s more work to do. Will you back us in?
